God Fall
Steam, Soot, and Fallen Gods — An Interactive RPG Novel
Awaken in St. Arren, a city of soot and steam, and hear at the edge of madness the whispers of gods fallen into the void.
Gather the divine shards scattered among mortals and climb the nodes of a god’s lineage—yet every fragment of divinity quietly erodes the self you were.
Three Hundred and Eighty-Seven Years Ago, the World Grew Silent
Twelve years before the God Fall, the 25th deity broke the silent pact among the gods, revealing the underlying truth of the world’s workings to a human scholar named Erwin.
The manuscript spread. The gods split over the question of whether mortals possessed the right to comprehend truth, igniting the War of Interrogation—a decade-long war engulfing all twenty-four known deities alongside the 25th, fundamentally reshaping the geometric structure of the material realm.
In Year 1 of the God Fall Era, the world fell silent. Miracles ceased entirely, prayers went unanswered, and divine healing alongside sacral laws simultaneously lost their efficacy.
Humanity entered an era of great panic that lasted for decades.
And So, Steam Sprang from the Absence of God
In Year 23 of the God Fall Era, the engineer Watt Elden constructed the first large-scale, high-pressure compensatory steam engine in Black Iron City.
Stripped of miracles, humanity was forced to rebuild productivity and urban function with gears, steel, and high-pressure steam. This was the "Compensatory Steam Engine Civilization"—an entire era of machinery born solely to fill the void left by gods.
Meanwhile, in Eldritch, the Fog Capital, the St. Gregory Censorship Bureau of Forbidden Books was established in Year 68 of the God Fall Era, completely banning surviving fragments of the War of Interrogation and any symbols suspected of belonging to the 25th. Certain truths were deemed unfit to ever be recalled.
The Divine Atlas: A Ladder, and Simultaneously an Erosion
In Year 145 of the God Fall Era, the scholar Heinrich published "Divine Nodes and Geometric Atlases," proving that mortals could harbor and connect divine shards from different pathways. The modern system of power was thus established.
Twenty-four pathways each lead toward a fallen deity, every pathway comprising twelve sequences for mortals to climb toward godlike authority. For instance, the first sequence of Nysselan, "The Welcomer," is titled "Seated by the Hearth"—those who step into his dwelling receive the finest hospitality, only to never find the door again.
Ascension demands matching divine shards. Yet every advancement exacts its cost of disorder: divinity gradually overwrites your cognition, habits, and persona.
In Year 189 of the God Fall Era, the Blacksteel Shard Merchant Guild was founded, turning shards into underground hard currency and fuel for advanced steam engines. From that moment, divinity bore a price tag.
The Three Faces of the Gods
Protective Faction — The way they protect you is by ensuring you never know.
Tormentor Faction — They never pretended to care about you; at least they never lied.
Neutral Gods — It is not that they do not care; they simply care about things other than you.
Felian heals every wound without ever asking where it came from—thus tyrants and criminals were cured alike, yielding a century of civil war.
Somna, to spare the world from suffering, constructed a collective dream spanning three kingdoms, plunging half the population into a slumber they refuse to wake from.
Ussegai raised towering waves, solely to hear the cries calling his name before ten thousand drowned.
Good and evil are of little use here.
And Now, It Is Year 387 of the God Fall Era
Continent-wide, the unearthed frequency of divine shards has surged by 300% year-on-year.
The seals on the Rift have loosened across the board. Whispers of the Imprisoned God have already been observed by academic institutions in multiple cities.
In Year 368 of the God Fall Era, "Word Disappearance Syndrome" broke out in Eldritch, the Fog Capital—fourteen everyday vocabulary words, including "love" and "oath," vanished entirely from citizens' memories.
In Year 381 of the God Fall Era, dozens of crystallized shards fell overnight across the Nightridge Mountains; those affected plunged into an unawakening slumber.
Underground market prices have skyrocketed. Major sects and the Censorship Bureau have entered their highest state of alert.
And it is at this moment that you awaken.
